How could Edo State be so deservedly be blessed with a Governor of the caliber of Governor Okpebholo, especially in the vibrant tapestry of our political landscape? Governor Monday Okpebholo now stands as a beacon of integrity and faith in Edo State. His leadership is a harmonious blend of reverence for tradition and unwavering devotion to spiritual values. Governor Okpebholo's journey is not just a political ascent but a testament to the power of promises kept and the profound impact of spiritual conviction.
From the outset of his campaign, Governor Okpebholo pledged to honor and uphold the sanctity of traditional institutions. True to his word, on the 15th of March, 2024, he paid homage to the revered Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II. This visit was not a mere formality but a heartfelt reaffirmation of his commitment to preserving the cultural heritage that defines Edo State. The Governor's respectful demeanor and genuine reverence for the Oba and other traditional rulers have fostered a renewed sense of unity and respect within the community.
Governor Okpebholo's dedication to spiritual institutions is equally profound. His visit to Streams of Joy International Church in Abuja on Sunday, 5th January 2025, stands as a beacon of his faith-driven leadership. On the 22nd of June, 2024, he shared a poignant testimony, recounting his journey to the governorship. With the powerful declaration, "What God cannot do does not exist," he inspired countless individuals, illustrating the boundless possibilities that faith can unlock. His encounter with the divine, as he narrated, was not just a personal milestone but a testament to the transformative power of belief.
These actions, rooted in a deep respect for both tradition and spirituality, have cemented Governor Okpebholo's legacy as a leader of unparalleled integrity and vision. His ability to bridge the gap between the past and the present, to honor the wisdom of the ancestors while embracing the promise of the future, has ushered in a new dawn for Edo State. In stark contrast, Governor Godwin Obaseki's tenure was marked by actions that many perceived as disrespectful to traditional institutions. His administration's involvement in the controversy over the ownership of repatriated Benin artefacts, where he initially claimed ownership, led to tensions with the Oba of Benin. This move was seen as a disregard for the cultural heritage and authority of the traditional rulers. Additionally, Obaseki's decision to appoint a traditional ruler in the Iddo community, which was condemned by High Chief Kasshim Otaru, the Otaru of Iddo community, as a violation of their customs.
To correct the sordid wrongs of his predecessor, Governor Okpebholo has restored the full statutory rights of the Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II, abolishing the new traditional councils in Edo South created by the directionless Governor Obaseki who tried and failed in his bid to reenact the historical wrong where his forebearer tried something similar and failed woefully.
Governor Okpebholo didn't stop at restoring the full rights of the Oba, he also backed the Federal Government’s Gazette, which gave the ownership of the returned artefact to the Oba’s palace, which was looted during the 1897 Benin massacre by the British colonial forces.
This was disclosed in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua in Benin City.
Governor Okpebholo's legacy is one of promises made and promises kept, a legacy that will undoubtedly inspire future generations to strive for greatness while honoring the rich cultural and spiritual heritage that defines them.
