In 2000, President Olusegun Obasanjo was facing multiple crises, from tensions with National Assembly leadership to accusations of marginalising the North and the massacre of civilians in Odi.

In an interview with TheNEWS, his ex-wife, Taiwo, said his troubles were to be expected because Obasanjo was not a man of peace, alleging that he had used and later abandoned her on his path to the presidency.

She said, "I went home to campaign and mobilise people. I was cooking every day without collecting a penny. I went with my family, friends, associates, and we all worked for him. We contributed extensively to the Obasanjo Campaign Fund in naira and dollars. Everything ran into millions. 

"Now, the man got to Aso Rock and just dumped everybody. He does not want to see any of his supporters now or even acknowledge them. Do you part with your money just like that? Because politics is business. You don't put your money in it without expecting some returns. You don't put your money in a business you know will not yield anything.

"Those who went all out to ensure that this man got there are now suffering untold hardship under him. Some cannot send their children to school. Many of them are dying. 

"The way I see him now, he is a civilianised Abacha. He is just another King Pharaoh in power."
