Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara Withdraws from APC Gubernatorial Primaries

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress gubernatorial primaries in Rivers State. The decision was made public in a press statement issued on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

Fubara said the decision followed deep reflection and extensive consultations with his family, friends, and associates. He stated that leadership requires sacrifice and that personal ambition must sometimes give way to the greater good of the people.

“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he said. The governor pledged his commitment to support whoever emerges as the APC candidate.

Addressing his supporters, Fubara acknowledged their disappointment and thanked them for their time, resources, prayers, and loyalty throughout the campaign. He described his silence in recent weeks as deliberate and guided by what he called the higher interest of the state and its people.

The governor said he faced immense pressures and difficult choices but maintained that his love for Rivers State remained greater. He also thanked the APC for the platform extended to him and expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and encouragement.

Fubara said he stepped aside “not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice” so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity. He added that he remains committed to serving the people of Rivers State until the end of his term.
