The Chief Medical Director of University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia N. Ize-Iyamu, today commissioned the newly renovated Paediatric Outpatient (POP) Reception and Nurses Bay, marking the successful completion of recent upgrade efforts within the hospital’s Paediatric Outpatient Clinic.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Ize-Iyamu disclosed that the renovation was funded entirely through the hospital’s internally generated revenue from patient services.
She said this approach stems from UBTH’s commitment to prudently reinvesting its resources to enhance service delivery and improve patient experience.
The Chief Medical Director clarified that the completed renovation is separate from the Edo State Government–approved ₦2.5 billion legacy project for the construction of a modern Paediatric Centre at UBTH.
According to her, the forthcoming Paediatric Centre is designed to significantly transform paediatric healthcare delivery at the institution upon completion.
She explained that the decision to renovate the POP Reception and Nurses Bay followed the identification of urgent needs within the clinic’s reception and waiting areas, adding that management responded promptly to address the gaps in order to better serve children and their caregivers.
As a result of the upgrades, paediatric patients and their families are now received in a more welcoming, child-friendly, and comfortable environment. The improved setting is expected to reduce anxiety, promote calm, and support a more positive hospital experience for young patients.
The renovated facility features redesigned seating, enhanced illumination, and an ambience tailored to meet the needs of children. In addition, the Nurses Bay has been significantly upgraded to facilitate more efficient workflows and the delivery of quality patient care.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu expressed appreciation to members of staff, particularly those in the Paediatric Department, for their dedication and cooperation, which she described as instrumental to the project’s success.
The hospital management expressed optimism that the renovated Paediatric Outpatient Clinic will enhance patient satisfaction and contribute positively to improved health outcomes for young patients.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by hospital staff, dignitaries, and members of the community.
