Political Upheaval in Adamawa as Works Commissioner Resigns Following Defection Snub

YOLA, ADAMAWA STATE – In a dramatic political development, Adamu Atiku Abubakar has tendered his resignation from the post of Adamawa State Commissioner for Works. The resignation comes just days after he notably declined to follow Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri in defecting from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling a significant fracture within the state’s executive council.

The crisis stems from Governor Fintiri’s surprise political shift last Friday, February 27th, when he publicly announced his move to the APC. During that announcement, a list of 22 commissioners who were joining the governor in crossing party lines was presented. The conspicuous absence of Commissioner Adamu’s name from that list immediately marked him as a holdout and sparked intense speculation about his future within the administration.

Commissioner Adamu’s resignation, submitted to the Governor’s office, is widely interpreted as a direct consequence of his refusal to defect. Political analysts suggest his departure was almost inevitable, as his continued tenure as a PDP member in an APC-led executive cabinet would have been untenable, creating a potentially adversarial relationship with the governor and the newly aligned majority of the cabinet.

The resignation throws the state’s Ministry of Works into immediate uncertainty and raises questions about the stability of Governor Fintiri’s administration during this transitional period. Key infrastructure projects may face delays as a new commissioner is sought, and the event exposes underlying tensions within the state’s political structure. It remains to be seen if other officials who privately opposed the defection will follow suit.

Governor Fintiri’s office has yet to issue an official statement regarding the acceptance of the resignation or a potential replacement. Meanwhile, the opposition PDP in Adamawa State is likely to view Adamu Atiku Abubakar’s principled stand and subsequent resignation as a morale booster, potentially positioning him as a figure of loyalty within their ranks as the state’s political landscape undergoes a profound realignment.
