Edo Governor Unveils Bendel Insurance, Edo Queens Management and Players; Pledges Commitment to Revitalization.
Benin City, Edo State – January 14, 2025 – The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring the glory days of Bendel Insurance and Edo Queens Football Clubs with the unveiling of new management and players. The event, held Tuesday at Government House, Benin City, was presided over by Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, representing Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo.
Deputy Governor Idahosa emphasized the administration’s belief in the power of sports to foster unity and drive economic growth. He stated, “Today’s unveiling underscores the importance this administration places on sport as a vehicle for cohesion and progress.” He lauded the appointment of the new management teams and players as a testament to the government's dedication to revitalizing both clubs and returning them to the pinnacle of Nigerian football. He challenged the new coaches and players to work collaboratively, avoid indiscipline, and strive for excellence, aiming for performance beyond the Premier League for Bendel Insurance.
Idahosa also celebrated Edo Queens' success as defending champions of the Women Football League, highlighting the state's status as a hub for Nigerian sports. He expressed confidence in the newly unveiled teams to achieve further victories and success.
Hon. Desmond Enabulele, Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, praised the Governor’s support and expressed confidence in the newly selected management and players. He attributed the recent stellar performance of Edo Queens at the CAF Women's Championship to the government's unwavering support. Enabulele emphasized that the selections were based on merit and capacity, promising improved performance and national and international recognition for the state.
The newly appointed management team – Austin Iyamu (Technical Director), Peter Obanor (Team Manager), and Greg Ikhenoba (Coach) for Bendel Insurance – expressed their commitment to utilizing new strategies and play patterns to deliver victories and captivating football for fans. Thirteen new players have also been added to Edo Queens' roster.
Edo Queens' 2025 season kicks off Wednesday, January 15th, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium against Abia Angels FC. The event concluded with the official unveiling of the management and players of both clubs.
