Edo Governor Pays Tribute to Fallen Nigerian Soldiers on Armed Forces Remembrance Day
Benin City, Edo State – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, led tributes to fallen heroes of the Nigerian Armed Forces at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration in Benin City. The governor emphasized the profound sacrifices made by these soldiers, stating that Nigeria's unity and peace are a direct result of their courage and patriotism.
Speaking at the ceremony on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, Governor Okpebholo acknowledged that the day served as a solemn reminder of the ultimate price paid by these soldiers. He stressed that no honor could fully compensate for their sacrifices.
He urged all Nigerians, particularly Edo State citizens, to honor their memory by ensuring that their sacrifices were not in vain. Governor Okpebholo specifically cautioned against allowing a repeat of the events that led to the Nigerian Civil War.
"Our fallen heroes have served this nation and given their all by paying the ultimate price for the unity of this nation," Governor Okpebholo stated. "We will continue to honor their memories and I pray that their souls continue to rest in peace. Nigeria is enjoying peace today and we are still united as a nation today because these gallant armed men laid their lives for the nation."
The governor also highlighted the Edo State government's commitment to supporting the families of the fallen heroes, promising the initiation and continuation of welfare packages to alleviate the impact of their loss.
The ceremony, attended by the governor's deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa; the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; the Edo State Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa; the Chief of Staff, Gani Audu; the Commander of the 4 Brigade Nigerian Army; a representative of the Oba of Benin; other security chiefs; and widows of fallen heroes, culminated in Governor Okpebholo laying a wreath in their honor.
