Kanu Dissolves IPOB’s Third Directorate of State Administration, Appoints New Leadership
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has announced the dissolution of the movement’s third Directorate of State (DOS) administration and the immediate inauguration of a fourth administration to oversee the group’s affairs. The decision was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday from IPOB’s World Headquarters in Langerfeld, Germany.
In the announcement, Kanu appointed United States-based Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ as the new Head of the Directorate of State, entrusting him with the responsibility of administering, coordinating, and managing the day-to-day affairs of IPOB under his direct authority and guidance. The appointment takes immediate effect.
The Directorate of State, established by Kanu in 2012 as the administrative arm of IPOB, has undergone several leadership transitions since its inception. The first administration was headed by Dr. Justin Akujieze, followed by Mazi Uchenna Asiegbu. The now-dissolved third administration was led by Chika Edoziem, who was appointed in March 2017 during Kanu’s detention at Kuje Prison.
According to the statement, the dissolution followed what Kanu described as a thorough assessment of the outgoing administration’s stewardship during a critical period in the Biafra restoration campaign. He maintained that the primary responsibility of the DOS is to protect the movement, defend its members, preserve its integrity, and advance its strategic objectives.
One of the major reasons cited for the dissolution was the alleged failure of the third administration to adequately prioritize the welfare of detained IPOB members. The statement claimed that numerous supporters remained in detention facilities, including Wawa Military Barracks in Niger State, for extended periods without trial, while others reportedly suffered severe hardship or died in custody.
The statement further accused the former administration of becoming distracted by internal conflicts, personal rivalries, and factional disputes at a time when the movement was facing significant external challenges. Kanu argued that resources and efforts that should have been directed toward legal advocacy, diplomacy, public engagement, and prisoner welfare were instead consumed by internal controversies.
Kanu also expressed concerns over what he described as declining unity within the movement and a weakening of public confidence in its leadership. He said the new administration has been mandated to rebuild trust, strengthen discipline, restore accountability, and promote greater cohesion among members worldwide.
Another issue highlighted in the statement was the management of IPOB’s communication infrastructure. Kanu alleged that key communication channels had been weakened, creating confusion among supporters and exposing the movement to misinformation. He directed the new administration to prioritize the recovery and strengthening of official communication platforms, including efforts to restore Radio Biafra.
As part of the restructuring, IPOB announced a new leadership team comprising officials responsible for finance, media, welfare, continental representation, diplomacy, and coordination across various regions. The organization also unveiled several special appointments covering Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and other strategic areas of operation.
In addition, Kanu announced the establishment of an Elders Advisory Council, which will serve as an advisory body positioned between the Supreme Leader and the Directorate of State. He also reinstated all previously suspended or expelled officers and directed all IPOB structures worldwide to cooperate with the new administration. The statement concluded with a call for members and supporters to remain united, disciplined, and committed to the movement’s objectives as the fourth Directorate of State administration assumes office.
