Police Disperse Protest at MOWAA Launch, Bring Peace Back to Benin City

Swift intervention by operatives of the Edo State Police Command on Sunday averted what could have been a major disruption at the official launch of the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) in Benin City.

According to a statement issued by ASP Eno Ikoedem, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, the Command had received credible intelligence about a planned protest intended to obstruct the event.

Acting on the report, Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, promptly deployed officers to the venue to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

The Commissioner personally addressed the protesters, successfully de-escalating the tension and ensuring that peace was restored without incident.

Normalcy returned swiftly, while expatriates and other dignitaries attending the launch were safely escorted to their hotels.

“The situation is fully under control,” the police spokesperson assured, adding that the Command has begun engagements with relevant stakeholders to address grievances through lawful and peaceful means.

The statement reaffirmed the Edo Police Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, maintaining public order, and upholding citizens’ rights within the confines of the law.

Residents were urged to go about their lawful activities without fear, as adequate security measures remain in place across the state.
