FROM TIMBER TRAILS TO SUSTAINABLE LEGACY: HON. VALENTINE ASUEN'S PASSIONATE PUSH FOR EDO'S FORESTS

Under the visionary leadership of His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo The Executive Governor of Edo State, whose unwavering support and passion for sustainable forest management and reforestation programs have been instrumental in driving the Edo State Forestry Commission's initiatives.

The Chairman of the Edo State Forestry Commission,Hon Valentine Asuen is spearheading a transformative agenda that shifts the narrative around the state's natural resources from mere exploitation to sustainable conservation and economic viability.

Driven by a clear passion for ecological health and community prosperity, he has championed a multi-stakeholder approach to forest management. This includes key collaborations, such as the renewed drive for sustainable forest management in the Okomu landscape with partners like the IDH and Okomu National Park. He views this collaborative model, exemplified by the Okomu Compact, as the future of responsible resource management, demonstrating how government, private actors, communities, and development partners can jointly address both environmental degradation and livelihood challenges. Under his leadership, the Commission's focus is crystal clear: ensuring that Edo's forest ecosystems remain both an ecological treasure and a socio-economic pillar for sustainable livelihoods for generations to come.

His commitment goes beyond policy statements; it is evident in proactive enforcement and innovation. To combat rampant deforestation and illegal logging that threaten the state's precious reserves, Hon. Asuen has personally overseen the inspection of impounded lorries loaded with unauthorized timber and inaugurated a dedicated enforcement team to safeguard ecological assets across all senatorial districts.

Furthermore, he is leveraging partnerships for innovative solutions, such as the announced collaboration with the Dangote Group on a large-scale reforestation project spanning 200 hectares, a project to restore biodiversity and increase farmers' income.

These initiatives underscore his belief that sustainable forest management must be a balanced practice—one that enforces environmental laws while simultaneously promoting economic activities that are eco-friendly and beneficial to local communities.

Hon. Valentine Asuen is setting a new, progressive standard for forest governance in Edo State, positioning it as a model for responsible resource stewardship in Nigeria. His leadership and vision for the state's forest resources are a testament to his commitment to sustainable development.
