Edo State Government Sets Up Committee to Review MOWAA Operations Following Public Concerns

BENIN CITY, EDO STATE - The Edo State Government has announced the formation of a special committee to investigate the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA), following widespread public concerns and petitions regarding its operations and governance. The announcement, released in a special government notice, indicates a commitment to address the issues raised by the Benin Royal Palace, traditional leaders, and members of the public.
The newly formed committee is tasked with clarifying the legal and operational status of MOWAA, with a particular focus on the role and rights of the Benin Royal Palace in the project. This move comes after growing criticism and protests regarding the museum's management and its perceived deviation from its original purpose.
The government's decision underscores its recognition of the Benin Royal Palace as the rightful custodian of the cultural heritage and artifacts of the Benin Kingdom.
The committee's mandate, as outlined in the government's announcement, includes:
1. Interfacing with international donors, partners, and trustees of MOWAA.
2. Ascertaining the true legal and operational status of MOWAA.
3. Clarifying the position, rights, and stake of the Benin Royal Palace and Traditional Institution in the museum project.
4. Making appropriate recommendations to the State Government for further action.
The committee will be chaired by former Governor of Edo State, Senator Adams Oshiomhole. Other prominent members of the committee include General Cecil Esekhaigbe (Rtd.) as Vice Chairman, alongside H.E. Lucky Imasuen, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Roland Itoyah Otaru (SAN), and Barr. Iryn Omorogiuwa serving as the Secretary.
The government has instructed the committee to begin its work immediately and submit its findings and recommendations as soon as possible.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., reiterated the government's commitment to protecting the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom. The statement emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and mutual respect in all partnerships and heritage-related initiatives. The formation of this committee signals the government's desire to address concerns and ensure that the MOWAA project aligns with the values and aspirations of the Benin people.
