Police Service Commission Orders Immediate Retirement of Senior Officers.
Abuja, Nigeria – The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have served for more than 35 years or have reached the age of 60. The decision, reached during the Commission's first extraordinary meeting on Friday, January 31st, 2025, reverses a previous ruling from September 2017. The PSC stated that the 2017 decision, which used enlistment dates rather than appointment dates for calculating service, contradicted the principle of service merger in the public service and violated Public Service Rule No. 020908 (i & ii).
The meeting, chaired by retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, included Justice Adamu Paul Galumje (representing the Judiciary), retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu (representing the Police), and Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani (Secretary to the Commission). The PSC determined that adherence to the 35-year service limit or age 60 retirement rule is necessary to align with established public service regulations. The Commission's decision has been formally communicated to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation.
The PSC's action affects a number of senior police officers who would have otherwise continued in service under the previously approved calculation method. The commission's reversal highlights the importance of adhering to established public service rules and regulations.
