De Parrot Media: Edo Governor Exposes N12 Billion Diversion by Suspended LG Chairmen
Benin City, Edo State – January 7, 2025 – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has revealed a shocking N12 billion embezzlement scheme involving 18 suspended Local Government Council Chairmen. The funds, allegedly siphoned over 15 months, were reportedly channeled to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders.
Governor Okpebholo made the startling revelation during a courtesy visit from the acting Local Government Chairmen and Councilors. He commended the acting officials for their courage in upholding transparency and democracy, emphasizing that local government funds are meant for the people, not individual enrichment.
The governor detailed how an investigation into questionable spending, including a mysterious “Environmental Security funding” item totaling N800 million monthly, uncovered the massive diversion. Despite repeated requests, the suspended chairmen failed to provide accounting records, prompting the governor to involve the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA). The EDHA subsequently suspended the chairmen for their non-compliance.
Governor Okpebholo highlighted the detrimental impact of this embezzlement, citing understaffed schools and neglected infrastructure as evidence of misappropriated funds. He assured the acting chairmen of his full support, emphasizing the importance of local government in delivering vital services to the people.
Hon. Damian Lawani, Chairman of the Local Government Commission, and representatives from Uhunmwonde, Esan West, and Owan West LGAs, affirmed their commitment to working with the governor to ensure good governance and equitable development across the state.
