DSS Summons Lagos Lawmakers Over Speakership Crisis

DSS Summons Lagos Lawmakers Over Speakership Crisis

The Department of State Services (DSS) has summoned two lawmakers from the Lagos State House of Assembly over their alleged role in the ongoing speakership crisis. The summons comes in response to the controversial removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025

According to reports, lawmakers Lanre Afinni and Sylvester Ogunkelu were invited for questioning at the DSS office in Magodo, Lagos. Although details of the inquiry remain unclear, sources suggest that other legislators accompanied them to the DSS office in a show of solidarity.

A DSS insider, who requested anonymity, confirmed the invitation, stating, “They were called in for questioning.”

Obasa was ousted by a majority of lawmakers over allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement. His removal led to the appointment of Mojisola Meranda, the former deputy speaker, as his successor.

Meanwhile, Muraina Taiwo, a member of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, has condemned Obasa’s impeachment, labeling it illegal and disrespectful to party leadership.

Obasa himself has denied allegations of corruption and insisted that due process was not followed in his removal. He stated, “I firmly believe I remain the Speaker until the proper procedure is carried out. If they wish to remove me, it must be done correctly, and I will not contest it.”

Taiwo urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene, stating that the crisis has divided the GAC leadership. He emphasized, “The lawmakers’ actions are illegal and show blatant disregard for leadership. However, we will all defer to our de facto leader, President Tinubu, to resolve this issue.
