Driver Strikes Military Troops, Killing One Soldier in Lagos.



Lagos, Nigeria – A private vehicle driver has been implicated in a fatal accident involving Nigerian Army troops in Lagos State.  According to a statement released by the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, the driver “recklessly ran into troops” during a bi-annual route march near Myhoung Barracks in Yaba on Friday.  The incident resulted in the death of one soldier and injuries to several others.


Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 81 Division, confirmed the fatality and injuries.  The deceased soldier has been taken to the mortuary, while the injured are receiving medical attention at the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Yaba.  The 81 Division Military Police, alongside other relevant security agencies, are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.


Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. He urged calm among the public, emphasizing that investigations into the incident are underway. The Army division vowed to maintain its training and readiness despite the tragedy, and reiterated its commitment to security within its area of operation.
