APC flag flies high in Zamfara as gov, deputy join party
The All Progressives Congress flag was hoisted at the Zamfara State Government House on Monday, replacing the Peoples Democratic Party banner following the defection of Governor Dauda Lawal and his deputy, Mani Mummuni, to the ruling party.
The ceremony, captured in video shared by X user @Imranmuhdz, showed officials and security personnel overseeing the orderly removal of the PDP flag and the subsequent raising of the green-white-sky blue APC standard at the Government House premises in Gusau, the state capital.
Confirming the governor’s defection, his media aide, Nuhu Anka, said in a statement that his principal dumped the PDP for the APC after engagements with party leaders and supporters in the state.
“The Government and PDP family of Zamfara State wish to formally inform the general public of an important political development following extensive consultations with stakeholders, political leaders, elders and supporters across the state.
“After careful consideration, and in the overriding interest of stability, progress, and the sustainable development of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, the Executive Governor of Zamfara State, has decided to formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress,” the statement read.
He is currently in Saudi Arabia on Lesser Hajj, handing over to Mummuni in an acting capacity.
The defection positions the APC as controlling at least 31 of Nigeria’s 36 states, further consolidating its dominance, particularly in the North-West geopolitical zone.
