President Tinubu Commends Governor Okpebholo for Healthcare Advancements in Edo State.

Benin City, Edo State – February 11, 2025 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo for his commitment to reviving and enhancing healthcare services in Edo State. This commendation was delivered by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Ishaq Salako, during a significant ceremony at the Edo State Government House on Tuesday.

During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to establish a National Obstetrics Fistula Centre in Benin City aimed at addressing the pressing issue of Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) in the region. Dr. Salako specifically noted that the cooperation from the current Edo State administration has been instrumental in making significant progress in healthcare initiatives within a short time.

“Before Governor Okpebholo took office in November 2024, the newly established center struggled to gain traction under the previous administration. We faced many challenges that stymied the center’s start-up. In just three months under Governor Okpebholo, we have achieved the milestones that seemed distant for almost two years," Dr. Salako stated.

The Minister revealed that Nigeria is home to the highest burden of Fistula cases globally, with approximately 12,000 new cases reported annually. He emphasized the severe social and psychological implications of the condition, which can lead to tragic outcomes for those affected. The Federal Government's initiative to offer free Fistula management is designed to provide essential support, with around 1,700 cases already benefiting from this program.

In his remarks, Governor Okpebholo expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for transforming the healthcare landscape in Edo State. He highlighted the community's dedication to health, asserting that the forthcoming Fistula Centre will not only cater to Edo State residents but will also serve surrounding states in the South-South region.

“This center represents a vital resource for our people. I am fully committed to ensuring its successful launch and operation, and I appreciate the Federal Government for selecting Edo State as its home," he affirmed.

With continued support and collaboration between state and federal authorities, the new National Obstetrics Fistula Centre promises to be a beacon of hope for many suffering from this debilitating condition.
