Benin Recreation Club, Sapele Athletic Club Forge Historic Affiliation Partnership

BENIN CITY — The Benin Recreation Club and Sapele Athletic Club have entered into an affiliation partnership aimed at strengthening relationships, promoting unity and fostering the exchange of ideas among members of both historic clubs.
The affiliation ceremony, which brought together executives and members of both clubs, was described as a significant milestone that would create opportunities for stronger collaboration, networking and mutual benefits.
Speaking during the event, representatives of the two clubs expressed optimism that the partnership would deepen friendship and cooperation while providing a platform for members to interact and share experiences.
The Vice President of Benin Recreation Club, Mr. Markus Mckane Okoebor, who represented the club’s president, also welcomed the partnership, describing it as a significant step towards strengthening the relationship between both organisations.
Okoebor said the affiliation was timely, noting that the two clubs share similarities in history, values and commitment to promoting social interaction.
He explained that Benin Recreation Club has continued to preserve its heritage while expanding its sporting and recreational activities, including tennis, board and card, swimming/football, badminton/beach volleyball, table tennis, billiard/snooker and bus stop sections.
He assured members of Sapele Athletic Club of a productive relationship, stressing that the partnership would go beyond social engagements to include meaningful collaboration and knowledge sharing.
He noted that the affiliation would enable members of both clubs to enjoy recognition across the two platforms and participate in activities that promote unity and social interaction.
The President of Sapele Athletic Club, Rotn. Anthony Uba President, described the affiliation as a historic development, noting that his club had long respected the legacy and reputation of Benin Recreation Club.
President explained that Sapele Athletic Club, established in 1913, remains one of Nigeria’s oldest clubs, adding that historical records, including a trophy won by the club in 1913, provided evidence of its long-standing heritage.
He said the club comprises various sections focused on sports, recreation and social activities, with membership drawn from professionals and individuals committed to service and community development.
According to him, the new partnership would allow both clubs to learn from each other, exchange ideas and create new opportunities for their members.
“We are happy and proud to be having this affiliation with Benin Recreation Club. We believe there are things we can learn from each other, and this relationship will open new opportunities,” he said.
Other speakers at the event highlighted the historical importance of both clubs, describing them as institutions where professionals, community leaders and elites converge to promote friendship, networking and development.
The ceremony ended with appreciation from both sides, as members expressed confidence that the affiliation would produce lasting benefits for the clubs and their members.
The Benin Recreation Club Inter-Club Relations Committee, which facilitated the initiative, is headed by Olorogun Jaboro Peters as Chairman, with Edoko Wilson Edoko serving as Vice-Chairman and Coach Ayobami Soretire as Secretary, alongside other members.
The committee had earlier visited Owerri Sports Club as part of efforts to strengthen inter-club relationships and promote collaboration among recreational institutions.
