Okpebholo Hails Edo Workers, Lists Labour Milestones, Pledges Sustained Welfare

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has commended labour leaders in the state for their steadfast support and constructive engagement with his administration, describing the relationship between organised labour and the state government as a model of productive partnership rooted in mutual respect.
Speaking at the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration in Benin City on Friday, the governor paid tribute to working men and women whose daily contributions, he said, continue to drive the development of Edo State. Governor Okpebholo, who was represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, listed teachers, health workers, civil servants, artisans, traders, and security personnel as the “backbone of Edo’s progress.”
The governor said workers’ welfare has remained a top priority since the inception of his administration, citing prompt payment of salaries and sustained payment of the 13th month salary as proof. He disclosed that the state has approved a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 monthly, describing it as recognition of labour’s right to dignified compensation. On outstanding arrears, he announced the release of ₦1 billion as the first tranche for salary arrears owed to Ambrose Alli University staff and another ₦1 billion for gratuities owed to retired local government pensioners.
Highlighting job creation efforts, Okpebholo said his administration has employed over 10,000 workers, including 5,000 teachers, 1,300 healthcare workers, and 2,500 local vigilantes. He added that the Local Government Training Institute in Akpako-Edo has been upgraded, with enrolment rising from about 30 to over 400 workers currently receiving professional training. On economic empowerment, he announced a ₦1 billion interest-free loan scheme targeting traders, artisans, and entrepreneurs.
On security, the governor reported that cult-related killings have dropped from over 300 annually to “almost zero” due to decisive action, adding that security agencies have been equipped with vehicles, motorcycles, and operational materials to sustain the gains. He credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for enabling the state’s progress and urged workers to continue supporting the Federal Government’s reforms.
Addressing concerns on the contributory pension scheme, Okpebholo said a high-powered committee has been constituted to review the matter and submit recommendations within the shortest possible time. “My dear workers, this administration believes governance must be measured by impact, not promises. We will continue to work with labour in mutual respect and good faith as we build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Edo State,” he stated.
