IGP Clarifies Budget Presentation "Drama" at National Assembly
Abuja, January 17, 2025 – Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun today addressed the controversy surrounding the presentation of the Nigeria Police Force's (NPF) 2025 budget to the National Assembly. The IGP vehemently denies submitting two different budget proposals, as some media reports have alleged.
The incident occurred yesterday, January 16, during a presentation to the Joint Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions. According to the IGP, two versions of the budget – a comprehensive and an abridged version – were provided to committee members. The abridged version, designed for easier understanding, was agreed upon by the committee prior to the presentation.
However, Senator Onyekachi Nwoebonyi (Ebonyi North), who arrived late, reportedly insisted on referring to the comprehensive document, despite committee members' explanations and the IGP's assurances that both documents contained the same figures. The senator allegedly refused to listen to clarifications and left the meeting abruptly.
IGP Egbetokun described the senator's actions as "unnecessary drama" that could have been avoided. He stressed that the NPF submitted only one budget proposal.
The IGP also highlighted the ongoing budgetary challenges facing the force, including inadequate funding, a restrictive budget system, and delays in fund releases. He asserted that these obstacles hinder the NPF's ability to modernize and effectively address its expanding responsibilities.
In a concluding statement, the IGP appealed for public patience and support, emphasizing the NPF's commitment to professional and dedicated service.
