The reigning champions, Edo Queens, kicked off their 2024/2025 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) season in spectacular fashion, achieving back-to-back victories that underscore their title defense ambitions. Their latest triumph was a spectacular 5-0 victory at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium against Abia Angels, captivating an electrified home crowd and reaffirming their status as the team to beat.

A Masterclass Performance at Home

The match against Abia Angels was more than just a win; it was a masterclass of football. The stands were filled with passionate supporters, and the atmosphere was charged with excitement, enhanced by the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Edo State's Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, former Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission Hon. Desmond Enabulele, and Executive Director, Mrs. Sabina Chikere. Their attendance significantly bolstered the morale of both the team and the fans, adding a layer of prestige to the event.

The scoring frenzy began in the 29th minute when Miracle Useni unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the box, sending the home crowd into a frenzy as the ball rippled the net. Mere minutes later, Emem Essien showcased her skill, dancing past two defenders before calmly slotting the ball home, putting Edo Queens firmly in control.

The second half saw Edo Queens maintain their attacking momentum. In the 50th minute, Goodness Osigwe demonstrated her composure by converting a penalty with precision, sending the Abia Angels goalkeeper the wrong way. The crowd erupted as Loveth Edeh extended the lead in the 59th minute with a powerful header, perfectly reacting to a rebound from a corner kick.

The icing on the cake came in the 79th minute when Kafayat Mafisere showcased her poaching instinct, scoring a well-placed goal that crowned a fantastic display of football from Edo Queens. The home crowd erupted as the scoreline reflected their team’s total dominance.

Edo Queens Continue Winning Ways Away from Home

Not content with just one resounding victory, Edo Queens took their momentum to Owerri, where they confronted Heartland Queens on Matchday Two. The match unfolded in front of a lively crowd, and once again, Edo Queens made their mark, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

Goodness Osigwe was the star of the show, scoring both goals for Edo Queens. She opened the scoring in the 40th minute, giving her side a deserved lead going into halftime. Heartland Queens, eager to mount a comeback, found the net early in the second half thanks to Monica Matthew’s effort in the 48th minute, igniting a tense atmosphere on the pitch.

However, it was Osigwe's second goal in the 70th minute that sealed the match for Edo Queens, allowing them to maintain their position at the top of the table. Despite Heartland Queens’ brave attempts to recover, they could not withstand the superior firepower and tactical finesse of the Edo Queens.

A Clear Message to Rivals

With two wins from two matches, the Edo Queens are not just starting the season; they are setting the pace in the NWFL. Their performances so far send a clear message to their rivals that they are a force to be reckoned with. The recent triumphs have raised the question: can anyone halt their impressive momentum?

As they continue their title defense, fans eagerly await what the rest of the season has in store for the Edo Queens. One thing is certain—the queens are back, and they mean business.
